Amplification as Furniture

Ah, the 1970s.

In the good ole days of rock n roll, a young musician needed all the room he could get in the back of his van.

Load up a five piece Ludwig drum set (with "swirl" marble finish), a bass guitar rig (with a huge 2 15 speaker cabinet), a Fender Twin (the pride and joy of any teenage working man still living at home rent free), three or four guitars with "coily" cables in "soft shell" cases (which is code for glorified cardboard), a Rhodes piano, and a PA system (remember "column" speaker cabinets?) and you ran out of room quickly.

Add 6 or 7 or more warm bodies to the mix and it gets really crowded in the back of a Ford Econoline. With only two bucket seats up front, the passenger seat was sure to go to one of the ladies (we dared not call them groupies because they usually had gas money). The rest of the guys in the band and the "crew" were jammed in the back, wobbling and bopping along for a bumpy ride on the way to the gig.

Enter the Kustom "tuck and roll" amplifier.
It truly was a God-send. For those who have experienced the luxurious comfort of the padded covering, the Kustom amps not only sounded great (or so we thought) and fit the budget of a garage band, they made great seats!

Those are days we recall fondly. It's good to take a nostalgic look back with appreciation, even if there were haircuts we would just as soon forget. Along with other memories that still evoke a smile, the rump saving metal flake tuck and roll Kustom amps were a poor guitar player's dream come true, and the improvised furniture of our generation.
